The Calcutta High Court recently reviewed the case of Faizan Ahmed, an IIT Kharagpur student who was found dead in his hostel room in October of the previous year. After examining a second autopsy report, the court concluded that his death was a result of homicide.
Justice Rajesekhar Mantha of the Calcutta High Court stated that in the upcoming hearing, the decision regarding which investigating agency will handle the case will be made, according to eNewsroom.
On October 14, 2022, the body of Faizan Ahmed, a third-year mechanical engineering student and member of the Aerial Robotics and RoboSoccer teams at IIT Kharagpur, was discovered in a partially decomposed state inside a hostel on the campus. Faizan, originally from Tinsukia, had secured the 11th All India Rank in the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) in 2020 and was receiving a scholarship from the Assam government.
Following the incident, the IIT authorities initially claimed it was a suicide case. The initial postmortem examination conducted on the 23-year-old did not establish a definitive cause of death. No toxic substances were found in his body, and there were no visible signs of hanging on his body.
However, retired forensic expert Ajay Kumar Gupta, who was appointed by the High Court to review the case, analyzed video footage of the initial postmortem report and concluded that it indicated a case of hematoma. Dr. Gupta requested a second autopsy of Faizan’s body, which was subsequently conducted on May 27 at Calcutta Medical College Hospital. To perform the second autopsy, the body was exhumed from Dibrugarh and transported to Calcutta.
During the court hearing on June 6, the Calcutta High Court denied IIT Kharagpur access to a copy of the postmortem report at this stage. The court’s decision was based on the possibility that IIT Kharagpur might be implicated as the accused in the case. As a result, the institution was not granted access to the postmortem report at that time.
While hearing the case, Justice Mantha said: “IIT Kharagpur has also tried to fudge the documents.”
Lawyers representing the case, namely Ranjit Chatterjee, Atis Biswas, Niladri Sengupta, and Aniruddha Mitra, hailed the recent development as a significant milestone in establishing the contention that Faizan Ahmed was the victim of a murder. They viewed the court’s observation, based on the second autopsy report, as a crucial step in supporting the claim that Faizan’s death was not a suicide but a deliberate act of homicide.
Ranjit Chatterjee told reporters, “The second postmortem establishes a case of homicide with death occurring due to profuse bleeding from injuries in the head and chest.”
“Second PM report will be handed over to IO but not IIT at this stage because of their likely involvement in the murder,” he said.
Rehana and Salim Ahmed, mother and father of Faizan, who are fighting a tireless battle for the justice of their only child, Faizan, said, “Today, the court order proved that my son had not committed suicide. He was not a weak human. He was murdered. We always maintained and believed in this ever since we got the news of his death at IIT Kharagpur.”
The primary question that remains unanswered is the identity of the perpetrator who killed Faizan Ahmed within the premises of IIT Kharagpur. To address this crucial issue, the court has scheduled the formation of an inquiry body for Wednesday, June 14.
